4 Ways Children Can Communicate Their Food Allergies to Friends

It's important that children advocate for themselves and tell their friends about how serious food their allergies can be. As parents, we should encourage them to make food allergies a normal part of their conversations.

Here are 4 ways children with food allergies can communicate the severity of their condition to their friends:

1️⃣ DIRECT CONVERSATION
They can explain the specific foods they are allergic to and the potential consequences of consuming those foods. By discussing their allergies directly with their friends, they can educate them about the severity, and emphasize the importance of avoiding allergens.

2️⃣ ALLERGY AWARENESS INITIATIVES
Children can request permission from their school or community to give presentations on food allergies (RSFO can help!). Kids can share their personal experiences, explain the symptoms and risks associated with their allergies, and educate their peers about allergens and cross-contact. Kids can even tell them about the importance of timely administration of epinephrine.

3️⃣ ALLERGY ALERT BRACELETS OR ACCESSORIES
Wearing an allergy alert bracelet or necklace can help children communicate their food allergies, especially if they are non-verbal. These accessories often have clear and visible symbols or messages that indicate specific allergies. We love Lauren’s Hope Med ID Jewelry and Allermates. If you use these links, each company will donate a % of sales to RSFO.

4️⃣ PERSONALIZED ALLERGY CARDS
Children can create personalized allergy cards that provide information about their specific allergies and the potential severity of reactions. These cards can be shared with their friends and serve as a reminder to avoid certain foods or ingredients. The cards can be kept in wallets or backpacks and presented whenever necessary, especially during group activities or outings where food is involved. Check out Equal Eats for some great allergy cards.

👉 Remind your kids that their friends should respect their food allergies. True friends will take the time to learn.
