Empower Your Child With These 6 Strategies
Many children with food allergies develop fears and anxiety around them — so as a parent, how can you help?
Here are 6 ways parents and caregivers can help children develop a realistic and positive approach toward their food allergies.
1️⃣ CREATE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT
When your child knows they are in a safe environment, they're able to relax and not constantly worry about allergens. Talk to your child's teachers and caregivers about safety protocols, make sure they know your emergency action plan, and involve other parents at school to ensure your child's environment is safe.
2️⃣ READ LABELS
Understand the importance of reading food labels and recognizing allergens and ensure your child develops the habit too (when they’re old enough to read). This gives them a confidence boost and a sense of independence.
3️⃣ POSITIVE LANGUAGE
Never use words or expressions that convey fear to your child about their food allergies. Instead use positive and empowering language when discussing allergies.
4️⃣ INCLUDE THEM IN DECISION-MAKING
When you involve your child in making food choices, it helps them feel in control. They gradually learn to choose what's safe for them. Also teach them how to confidently communicate to others about their allergies.
5️⃣ LEAD BY EXAMPLE
Demonstrate a positive attitude towards managing allergies. Make your child aware that having allergies doesn't limit their ability to enjoy life.
6️⃣ CELEBRATE ACHIEVEMENTS
No matter how small or insignificant you think it is, you must acknowledge and celebrate your child's efforts in managing their allergies. It is extremely important that you focus on their strengths and resilience.
