Food Allergy Hero of the Month: Avyay Bharath
By Avyay Barath
“Hello, I am Avyay Bharath, in grade 11 from Hyderabad, India. I have suffered from an invisible disability my whole life in the form of food allergies. In countries like India, the awareness for food allergies is extremely low and the quality of life for such people can be enhanced tremendously. Given my personal journey so far, I am driven and determined to help improve the quality of life of people suffering from food allergies.
My main goal is to specifically improve the awareness of food allergies in public places such as restaurants, airports, etc. I plan to achieve this by using a personalised subtle identification system where someone walks into a restaurant/public space that has been trained by us wearing our lanyard. This signifies to the waitstaff or help that the individual with the lanyard has food allergies which will allow the waitstaff to come up to the customer and ask about their specific food allergies.
We are also working in collaboration with Dr. Sivaranjani, MBBS in Hyderabad, India who will be training all the waitstaff on epipen usage and how to deal with someone incase they go into an anaphylactic shock. I found Red Sneakers for Oakley extremely inspiring and I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this transformation.”
Avyay and his friend Shiven Pulgam have teamed up to work on this project. Together, they are making a difference for the food allergy community in India.
