Unexpected Peanut Sources in Household Items

Many packaged foods you wouldn’t expect to contain or “may contain” peanuts have peanuts and nuts listed – always read labels!

The following are some items that have been found to have traces of peanuts, peanut shells, or peanut oil:

* Bean bag chairs (peanut shells)

* Hacky sacks

* Fireplace logs

* Mousetraps

* Roach/ant bait disks

* Homemade play dough (peanut oil)

* Fiberboard shelving

* Burlap bags

* Pellets for stoves

* Some cosmetics, lotions, and shampoos may contain peanuts/peanut oil (listed as arachis oil)

* Exfoliator (ground nut shells)

* Some children’s vitamins

* Some prenatal vitamins

* Some baby diaper creams

* Some ear wax remover drops

* Massage oils

* Some add-in medicine flavors contain peanut ingredients

* Sunscreens and tanning oils

* Hamster food/bedding

* Dog food & treats

* Cat food & treats

* Bird seed/feed

* Livestock feed

* Kitty litter

* Hay (peanut shells)

* Some lawn fertilizer

* Potting soil with ground peanut shells

* Compost accelerator/additives

* Some insect granules

* Mulch (some contain peanut hulls)

* Peanut/peanut butter as a “secret” ingredient (ie: chili or Asian sauces)

* Cutting boards oiled with peanut oil

* Fireworks

* Peanut skins can be used in making paper

* Paint, varnish, lubricating oil, leather dressings, furniture polish, insecticides and nitroglycerin can be made from peanut oil

* Peanut-scented fishing lures

* Organic bore oil for wooden musical instruments
