Unexpected Products That May Contain Dairy
So many unexpected products contain milk (like canned tuna 😮), which is why it’s SUPER important to read Every Label Every Time.
Additionally, several food and non-food products are not covered by FDA labeling laws, and small-batch “local” food producers aren’t always aware of the law.
Below are several products that you might not have realized contain milk that you should be on the lookout for:
Crackers (butter and/or milk powder)
Granola mixes (butter)
Canned tuna (casein, which is a milk protein)
Instant potatoes (butter or milk)
Flavored chips (flavoring may contain milk)
Deli meats (sometimes contain casein, which is a milk protein)
Broths and stocks (some brands include milk proteins)
Medications and vitamins (whey, which is a milk protien)
Beauty products (shampoos, soaps, makeups, etc. may contain milk)
Dustless chalk (casein, which is a milk protein)
Chewing gum (some brands contain Recaldent, also called casein)
Bread (sometimes contain casein, which is a milk protein)
Ready-to-eat meals (butter and/or milk)
Instant iced teas (milk solids or milk proteins)
Instant coffee/hot chocolate (milk powder)
Latex items like gloves (milk protein has been used in the powder)
Supplements (dairy contains an assortment of nutrients that may be placed in supplements)
Adhesives (some glues contain casein, which is a milk protein)
Baby formula (some brands contain milk)
If you are uncertain whether or not a product contains milk, it’s always best to call/email the manufacturer of the product. When in doubt, err on the side of caution and stay away. And remember: a brand or food that was dairy-free yesterday could change any time!
