5 Ways To Use Teal Pumpkin This Halloween
Started by Becky Basalone, the director of a local Tennessee food allergy support group, and grown to its recognition today by Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) organization, the Teal Pumpkin Project is a worldwide movement to raise awareness about food allergies, specifically during Halloween.
This project encourages everyone to provide non-food treats for trick-or-treaters, in addition to or instead of traditional candies. These non-food treats are placed in teal-colored pumpkins, which signify a safe and inclusive Halloween experience for children with food allergies or other dietary restrictions.
Here are 5 innovative ways to ensure a spooky but safe Halloween with the Teal Pumpkin Project:
TEAL PUMPKIN TREASURE HUNT
Get together and organize a neighborhood treasure hunt. You can hide teal pumpkins with each one containing small toys, stickers, or allergy-friendly treats.
CREATE ALLERGY-FRIENDLY RECIPE EXCHANGES
Encourage your neighbors to exchange allergy-friendly recipes that can be enjoyed by everyone. Along with a safe Halloween, this will also promote food allergy awareness. Make sure everyone knows about cross-contact.
TEAL PUMPKIN DECORATING CONTEST
Hold a teal pumpkin decorating contest in your community. Again, this not only raises awareness about food allergies but also engages children and their parents creatively in the cause.
EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS
To help raise awareness in your neighborhood/town, you can organize workshops or presentations about food allergies. Involve local schools as well as community centers to help educate children and parents about the challenges faced by those with food allergies.
VIRTUAL TEAL PUMPKIN PROJECT
Add your house to FARE’s virtual map that marks all houses participating in the Teal Pumpkin Project. This will help parents to plan safe trick-or-treating routes for their children.
Teal is the new orange! Time to join the Teal Pumpkin Project and spread the word.
