10 Tips To Keep Your Family Halloween-Safe

Don't let food allergies dampen a spook-tacular and safe celebration this Halloween. Here are 10 tips to stay safe this Halloween:

1️⃣ PLAN AHEAD: Consider organizing a "safe treat" swap with friends or neighbors so everyone can enjoy allergy-friendly goodies.

2️⃣ TEAL PUMPKIN PROJECT: Make a difference. Display a teal pumpkin at your doorstep so others know you have non-food treats available for children with food allergies.

3️⃣ FOOD-FREE FUN: You and your child can focus on the non-food aspects of Halloween — costumes, decorations, and spooky games — and little toys or safe treats instead of candy.

4️⃣ TRICK-OR-TREAT ROUTES: Choose routes that are familiar to you and close to your home. This makes it easier for you to manage potential allergy-related emergencies.

5️⃣ READ LABELS: Some sizes of candy (ie: fun size) may contain allergens not found in their regular versions. Call the manufacturer if you’re not sure.

6️⃣ EMERGENCY PLAN: Ensure you and your family know how to use an epinephrine auto-injector. Keep two on hand during trick-or-treating.

7️⃣ COSTUME CONSIDERATIONS: Opt for costumes, especially in the case of kids, that don't obstruct vision or breathing. Masks and face coverings can be challenging especially during an emergency.

8️⃣ TALK TO NEIGHBORS: Prior to Halloween, speak with your neighbors and let them know about your food allergies. Many people are understanding and willing to provide safe treats.

9️⃣ CARRY ID & EMERGENCY CONTACTS: Make sure your child knows how to contact you or another adult in case of an emergency. Have your ID and emergency contact info on you, especially if you'll be attending large gatherings or visiting unfamiliar areas.

🔟 BUDDY SYSTEM: Encourage your children to go out with a group of friends. There's safety in numbers, and it's also more fun to celebrate with friends.

All it takes is a bit of preparation and some positive communication to make Halloween both safe and thrilling!
