6 Tips To Confidently Manage Food Allergies

Living with food allergies can be challenging, so we've put together some tips that can help you manage them.

1️⃣ ALWAYS BE PREPARED
It helps to plan ahead and be prepared wherever you go. Pack safe snacks or meals when traveling or attending events. This ensures you have something to eat and also reduces the risk of accidental exposure.

2️⃣ EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
Communicate your food allergies clearly and assertively. If possible, carry food allergy cards with you. You can share them with your friends, family, coworkers, and restaurant staff. Be sure they know how life-threatening food allergies can be. When dining out, don't hesitate to ask questions about ingredients and food preparation methods. Train your family, friends, and coworkers on how to administer epinephrine during an emergency.

3️⃣ READ LABELS
Get into the habit of reading all food labels thoroughly. Look for allergen warnings and double-check ingredient lists, as formulations can change over time. Be vigilant, even with products you have previously used.

4️⃣ SEEK SUPPORT
Connect with others who have food allergies. Join support groups, online communities, or attend local events. Sharing experiences and tips can be empowering and help you feel less alone.

5️⃣ DINING OUT
Research allergy-friendly restaurants in advance. Call ahead to discuss your dietary needs and ask about their food allergy training and protocols, (ie: avoiding cross-contact). Clearly inform your server about your food allergies and make sure the chef knows too. Simple dishes with minimal ingredients can minimize your risk. Avoid alcohol or drink responsibly.

6️⃣ CARRY MEDICATIONS
Always carry your prescribed meds, such as epinephrine auto-injectors, antihistamines, or any other emergency medication. Make sure they are easily accessible in case of an allergic reaction.

With proper planning and self-advocacy, food allergy will not hold you back!! 💪
Know that you are not alone in this journey, and there is a community of support behind you. Stay positive, be confident, and embrace life to the fullest!
