Other Names for Soy

The law requires US packaged foods to state clearly on the label if they contain soy or a soy-based ingredient. However, while checking food labels, you may come across ingredients that you might not suspect contain soy.

Other possible sources of soy or soy products are:

  • Asian foods

  • Flavorings

  • Hydrolyzed plant protein

  • Hydrolyzed vegetable protein

  • Natural flavoring

  • Vegetable broth

  • Vegetable gum

  • Vegetable starch

  • Flavorings may be soy-based

  • Vitamin E contains soybean oil

Here is a list of names that you need to be aware of if you have a soy allergy:

  • Hydrolyzed soy protein

  • Miso

  • Edamame

  • Natto

  • Soy albumin

  • Soy cheese

  • Soy fiber

  • Soy yogurt

  • Soy ice cream

  • Soy bean (curd, granules)

  • Shoyo sauce

  • Soy flour

  • Soy grits

  • Soy nuts

  • Soy milk

  • Soy sprouts

  • Soy protein concentrate

  • Soy protein isolate

  • Soy protein hydrolyzed

  • Soy sauce

  • Tamari

  • Tempeh

  • Textured vegetable protein (TVP)

  • Tofu

NOTE: Sometimes soy can be mentioned on the food label as “contains soy” statement after the ingredient list. Read all food labels thoroughly even if you've bought that item before.

Also, sometimes foods that don't contain soy can get contaminated during manufacturing. Look for advisory statements (not regulated by the FDA) such as "processed in a facility that also processed soy," or "made on shared equipment."
