Other Names for Soy
The law requires US packaged foods to state clearly on the label if they contain soy or a soy-based ingredient. However, while checking food labels, you may come across ingredients that you might not suspect contain soy.
Other possible sources of soy or soy products are:
Asian foods
Flavorings
Hydrolyzed plant protein
Hydrolyzed vegetable protein
Natural flavoring
Vegetable broth
Vegetable gum
Vegetable starch
Flavorings may be soy-based
Vitamin E contains soybean oil
Here is a list of names that you need to be aware of if you have a soy allergy:
Hydrolyzed soy protein
Miso
Edamame
Natto
Soy albumin
Soy cheese
Soy fiber
Soy yogurt
Soy ice cream
Soy bean (curd, granules)
Shoyo sauce
Soy flour
Soy grits
Soy nuts
Soy milk
Soy sprouts
Soy protein concentrate
Soy protein isolate
Soy protein hydrolyzed
Soy sauce
Tamari
Tempeh
Textured vegetable protein (TVP)
Tofu
NOTE: Sometimes soy can be mentioned on the food label as “contains soy” statement after the ingredient list. Read all food labels thoroughly even if you've bought that item before.
Also, sometimes foods that don't contain soy can get contaminated during manufacturing. Look for advisory statements (not regulated by the FDA) such as "processed in a facility that also processed soy," or "made on shared equipment."
