Is It Safe To Use Epinephrine During Pregnancy
A 2017 case report titled ”Management of Maternal Anaphylaxis in Pregnancy” notes that epinephrine is a safe drug to use during pregnancy, with no major side effects.
In this case, a 26 year old women who was 25 weeks pregnant at the time was brought to the emergency room because of anaphylactic symptoms. She was immediately treated and received two injections of epinephrine. The patient recovered rapidly and 11 weeks later delivered a healthy baby. This case concluded that the management of epinephrine in pregnant patients is the same for those that are not pregnant.
Another 2019 abstract states that there is a *theoretical* risk of epinephrine causing uterine artery spasms, which may cause premature labor, but there is no actual evidence of negative side effects of epinephrine use in humans during pregnancy.
It should be noted that extra care is needed if the pregnant person’s blood pressure is 130/80 mm Hg or higher. Epinephrine may change the effects of oxytocin on the uterus, which could delay labor.
If you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant, it’s important to talk to your doctor about this.
