What To Do After Administering Epinephrine To Your Child

Epinephrine is the first line of treatment during anaphylaxis. For the safety and well-being of your child, you should do the following 4 important things after the first epinephrine shot is given:

1️⃣ SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION

Note the time that the first shot was administered and call 911. Ask for an ambulance with epinephrine. Inform responders about the time when epinephrine was last given when they arrive, and let them know about the child's known food allergies.

You can also head to the nearest hospital immediately after administering epinephrine if you're very close by. Since epinephrine is only a temporary treatment and its effects may wear off quickly, it's important to seek immediate medical attention.

Do this even if your child's symptoms seem to improve. Medical professionals need to monitor their condition and provide further treatment if necessary. Never wait it out.

2️⃣ KEEP THE CHILD CALM & LYING DOWN

Encourage the child to lie down in a comfortable position on their back. If the child vomits or has trouble breathing, help the child lie on their side. Remaining calm and avoiding unnecessary movement can help stabilize their condition until help arrives.

3️⃣ ADMINISTER A SECOND EPINEPHRINE DOSE IF NECESSARY

Some reactions will require a second dose of epinephrine, especially if the symptoms persist or worsen after the initial dose. If there has been no improvement or if the symptoms return, administer a second dose. You can also give additional prescription medicine (such as the child's inhaler/bronchodilator).

4️⃣ KEEP TRACK OF TIME & SYMPTOMS

Keep track of the time when the epinephrine was administered and note any changes in the child's symptoms. This information can be crucial for medical professionals to assess the severity of the reaction and determine appropriate follow-up care.
